Axis lock pocket knife: easy to use and reliable
The axis lock, a Benchmade invention, is a robust locking mechanism famous for its reliability and ease of use. This system uses a spring-loaded pin perpendicular to the hinge side of the blade. When the knife is opened, this pin drops into a recess at the back of the blade, locking it firmly between two supports. This construction ensures very strong and stable blocking, which is essential for safe use. In addition, an axis lock can be 'worn in'. Because the little bar (the crossbar) can wear in quite a bit across the bevel at the back of the blade, the lock remains perfect for years, on a frequently used knife. To close the knife, simply slide the spring-loaded bar, releasing the lock and allowing the blade to fold. This makes the axis lock not only easy to operate, but also safe, as your fingers will not come near the cutting edge while closing the knife. The axis lock is easy to operate by both left-handed and right-handed knife fans.
No longer a Benchmade exclusive
The Axis-lock was developed by Benchmade years ago and they held the patent on the design. However, this has since expired, the design became available to other brands. The axis lock's popularity is largely owed to its combination of ease of use, reliability and safety. It offers smooth operation and a strong lock, making it ideal for everyday use and demanding tasks.
Cross-bar lock: an alternative to the axis lock
The axis lock and cross-bar lock function the same way. Both use a pin to lock the blade in place. The main difference is the manufacturer. The axis lock is a Benchmade innovation, famous for its precision and smooth action. The cross-bar lock is used by several other brands, often at a slightly lower price. It's still a good choice, though quality may vary depending on the manufacturer.
